Course Conduct

The Biotechnology programme offers comprehensive training in utilizing biological systems for product development and skill acquisition for graduates pursuing careers as scientists in industries and academia. The objectives of the program include providing students with a foundational understanding of biotechnology, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills in various multidisciplinary biotechnological settings, and preparing students for research in industrial and academic fields.

The program aims to apply biotechnological principles to address societal issues in areas like agriculture, forestry, fishery, health, and environment. Students are also trained to develop transferable skills beneficial to society and suitable for employment, with the goal of producing leaders in biotechnology industries, government agencies, research institutes, universities, and self-employment.

Description of Courses

The Biotechnology programme is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the biological sciences along with the technical skills necessary to apply biotechnology in solving real-world problems. The first year emphasizes fundamental courses in biology, chemistry, and genetics, while subsequent years focus on specialized areas such as molecular biology, genetic engineering, bioinformatics, and industrial biotechnology, preparing students to innovate and apply biotechnological solutions in diverse fields by their final year.

The Biotechnology programme aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to manipulate biological systems for applications in healthcare, agriculture, environmental management, and industry. It prepares graduates for careers in biotechnology firms, pharmaceutical companies, research institutions, and regulatory agencies, as well as for entrepreneurial pursuits in bio-based industries.

Objectives of the Biotechnology degree programme include providing students with a comprehensive understanding of biotechnological principles and techniques, fostering problem-solving abilities in lab and industry-related contexts, developing practical skills in molecular techniques, data analysis, and bioprocessing, and nurturing transferable skills applicable across biological and non-biological sectors. The programme also prepares students for advanced studies in biotechnology or interdisciplinary fields, encourages an ethical approach to biotechnological applications, and emphasizes the importance of sustainability. Unique features of the programme include fostering innovation in genetic and cellular manipulation, promoting hands-on experience with laboratory and field research, and equipping graduates with the expertise required to drive advancements in biotech industries and contribute to global health, food security, and environmental sustainability.

B.A Arabic
Five credits at SSCE (or its equivalent) in Arabic, Islamic studies, Hausa, and two other Arts/Social Science subjects.
Two ‘A’ level credit passes in relevant subjects one of which should be Arabic in NCE or ND with at least a merit level.
UTME subjects are: Arabic, Islamic Studies, Hausa, and English subjects.
B.A. Islamic Studies
Five credit passes at SSCE (or its equivalent) in Arabic, Islamic studies, Hausa, and two other Arts/Social Science subjects.
(a)Two ‘A’ level passes in relevant subjects. One of the advanced level subjects should be Islamic Studies. NCE or ND at merit level.
